Bunions in Children should be treated early. Seeing a podiatrist will help prevent the toe becoming worse.
Bunions in children are not normal and should be treated early to prevent the bunion becoming larger or preventing pain. Most of the cases we treat are inherited. The exact trait that is inherited is unknown but we have found the main causes to be:
- Ligament laxity - loose ligaments
- Overpronation - rolling of the foot inwards placing too much pressure on the big toe joint
Our treatment is aimed at preventing the bunion from becoming larger. Non surgical treatment wont reduce the bunion but can help reduce pressure on the joint and relieve pain. We often use orthotics (insoles) to improve the joints movement along with good fitting shoes.
Surgery is not advised until the growth plates have fused and non surgical treatment has not improved the pain.
If your child has a bunion call us to make with our podiatrists who specialise in children at our Northcote and Howick clinic.
