Stress Fractures require 6-8 weeks rest and are a result of over-training.
Stress fractures occur when you over-train or train at high intensities. Footwear is often inadequate and fatigue occurs causing poor technique that increases stress to the bones.
We often see stress fractures in high impact and repetitive loading sports such as running, triathlon, hockey, elite dancers, football, basketball, and netballers. Identifying the signs early and making changes to training programs, surfaces, and managing footwear, will help prevent a stress fracture occurring. The mostly common areas we see stress fractures are in the shins and metatarsal bones.
Our podiatrists will diagnose the injury, refer to specialists if advanced images are needed, and discuss a change in activity program that takes weight off the injured site.
When the fracture has healed a gradual return to activity program, advise on correct footwear, orthotics (insoles), and correct run technique are often prescribed to help.
If you feel you are struggling to improve pain in the shins or foot and are involved in sports that require a high level of impact and training call us now to make an appointment with one of our experienced podiatrists.
